i will be pulling the plug on this thing,

sort of...
mrs. picturesofdetroit and myself will be moving,
moving up,
moving on,
making changes,
making moves,
gonna have to go offline for a couple of days,
disconnected,
out of reach,
out of touch,
moving the command post,
the beat laboratory,
the office,
you get the idea...

the idea was born

shared
and discussed
but it was put on hold
like most good ideas, it died
there were bigger fish to fry
new places
locations
state lines
so we took to the air
the open road…
months later
the idea found new life
continued life
the end result was glamorized
dreamt about
talked about
the idea was gaining momentum
steam
some phone calls were in order
some moves were made
some goods borrowed
some items-
just had to be purchased
and we were well on our way to
making a photograph….

the morning arrived
and the anticipation levels were high
fears were felt
hopes were accounted for
hard work
hard labor
a little bit of cash
and some quad espressos
and we were off
6 am
7 am
armfuls of gear
garbage bags
tote bags
camera bags
the darkness of the december morning
suddenly came alive
7 flights of stairs
and the air was thick
chilled
the load was heavy
the reward was greater
so on we went….
4 hours later
the stage was set
the lighting just right
a christmas tree
a television
and an old worn out lamp-
the idea had come to fruition
to life
the lights were on!
again
christmas was alive inside of an abandoned building
an abandoned apartment
alive and well and breathing
the glow was magnificent
warm
but soft
and the colored lights of our charlie brown christmas tree
were beautiful…

several hours later and i am home
reflecting
pontificating
very pleased with myself
ourselves
and i know now
that from this moment
forward
until the day that i die
i will never forget the feeling that
filled my heart, when
those lights turned on
that tv
turned on
the moment when we brought christmas back
and my only regret
is that there wasn’t enough room
inside of that tiny abandoned apartment
for the rest of the world
to watch
and enjoy
and feel the light wash over their souls
their hearts….

perhaps it was better this way
just the two of us
and tonight
I will sleep well
comforted by doing
comforted by being

christmas
is alive
and well
in detroit…

big thanks to john...

i stabbed a guy about 19 years ago,

through the door of his ford pick up truck
it was one of those combo hunting knives
that you get from Gibraltar Trade Center
you know the kind
with the compass on the end,
that unscrews
and there's matches inside
maybe a file
or tooth pick
you get the idea
well, the blade on the Rambo knife was about 10 inches long
i jumped out of the truck
and i started stabbing his door
in an underhand type of motion
plunge after thrust after plunge
and finally....
"ouch! i'm hit!!!"
and he got the fuck out of there
i'll never forget the look on his face
anyway
i wasn't trying to stab him;
see,
he was chasing me
through a Handy Dandy parking lot
and i got scared
so i jumped out
with the knife
you've already heard what happened,
fast forward-------
i ended up in a boot camp
90 days
only 8 of us made it the entire 90 days
the rest, off to serve their sentence
mine would have been pretty serious
they don't really like it
when you stab a motherfucker
through his car door
in a parking lot,
now do they?

i take my mother grocery shopping about once a month

today
i ran in to a guy from the old neighborhood
delray
he was older then me
about 10 years or so
we'll call him terry
he was a twin
his brother- we will call larry
anyway
they were pretty cool guys
factory workers
hard drinkers
i was 13
and terry smoked a joint with me
it was his joint
it was my first time
i got really high
which made him really nervous
he told me not to let anyone know
especially my mother
and i left....
20 some years later
and i think he might have fired one up today, but
it's been years since i have smoked a joint
so we exchanged some stories
and that was it

terry and i said goodbye...
