like a dumb ass

i didn't photograph the mileage at the end of our trip, so you're gonna have to take my word for it...

having said that

two thousand six hundred miles

seven states

a bunch of friends

about 20 locations

quite a few rejections

some shitty hotels

every fucked up dunkin' donuts in the north east

an earthquake

a hurricane...

fuck, we even got kicked out of an entire town by 5 cops with hard-ons!

i had a lengthy story that i was working on to accompany this photograph, but it isn't working for me right now...

so, thanks to all of you who helped us out along the way, there's a bunch of you!

i'll get to the good parts when i have all of my thoughts together and my ankles stop itching...

this was a difficult exterior to get right

it took me a couple of attempts before i was ultimately happy...while this definitely was not one of my favorite buildings in detroit, it was a nice example of 1950's contemporary design...but now, it is no more...

the rest are here...

well

it's no cass tech auditorium, but this is all i had to work with...

as i was shooting this, the building was loudly creaking,
from the demolition presumably?
anyway, it wasn't the creaking steel or the parade of cops who kept going in and out of the police station (just on the other side of that excavator) that had me worried. no, it was the onslaught of last minute scrappers running through the auditorium, snatching up every piece of metal they could get their hands on....right up to the last second!
now, i'm not usually bothered too much by scrappers if they happen to be inside a building while i'm shooting, but these guys kind of worried me, plus i was here alone...so this caused me to send a few text messages out there, to all of my friends...just to let someone know where my remains could be found...

as you can read, it all worked out in the end...

whatever.

this projection booth was impossible to shoot

it was engulfed in 95% darkness. the little bit of light that did find it's way in, cast terrible shadows and uncontrollable light beams...i'm nowhere near happy with this one, but at least i have a photograph of the projectors and it's decent enough to post online.

whatever...

the ford auditorium

yeah...

i never had the displeasure of hearing the poor acoustics that the ford auditorium was known for...i do seem to recall going there for something when i was in school, but i couldn't tell you much about my visit.

i did manage to shoot this location a few times before they started the demolition, and i have to say that the auditorium seating area was definitely one of the most challenging spaces that i have ever photographed...not just because it was near total darkness inside, but there was also the horribly misaligned rows of tacky seats, and...the curved walls that were supposed to improve the sound quality actually provided some nice, crooked, out of level lines to use- when framing the shot in my viewfinder...i could go on and on but i'm not one for excuses...

the only other decent photograph that i've seen from this place is from my boy,

uhm, jon bohy....

but since his version is marked private...

anyway,

i have a couple more pics from inside, and then maybe two demo shots, after that i'll close the door on this location and move on to the next chapter, whatever that is...

there was a little heroin

and some bum works on the counter top of the first vanity area...

anyway,

when i was younger

i wore my jeans quite a bit tighter then i do today

as i get older

i find comfort playing a bigger part in what i wear

where as in years past, style would always win

however

with my slightly, more relaxed jeans of today

i find that i have to adjust my....package, a little more frequently

sometimes i can see people trying to not see me adjust my balls

and my cock

i can't help it

this is just the ways it's gonna be...

more backstage

it was surprising to me how modest and boring the dressing room areas were, especially the smaller private ones...this one appears as though it may have been handicap accessible. except for the towel dispenser, which appears to be standard height? i really don't know why i just noticed this? perhaps it's because tonight is monday, and life is hard? maybe it's because i've seen too many law & order episodes, or because all of the good abandoned buildings in detroit are gone, or remodeled? maybe it's because a bottle of shampoo lasts so fucking long, i know that i've had my current one since january,

jesus...

Test

like i said

the ford auditorium was a tough place to shoot...
i've never really been happy with any of my images, new or old
but i did enjoy exploring there... the old-school back hallways and dressing rooms remind(ed) me of northville because of their yellow tile, and the lobby / auditorium provided some of the most dramatic lighting conditions that i've ever tried to photograph... unfortunately, there was always a distraction every time i shot the place, if it wasn't the threat of a security guard calling the police on us, it was the scrappers going to town on the other side of the room... sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 trips to get in to a groove at a certain location. i never got my 4th chance at this one...

in 2009

there was a security company on site at the ford auditorium. they did a decent job of keeping people out. only a few explorers had gotten inside up to that point, and very little scrapping had been done... by january of 2011 however, the security company was relieved of their duties...anyway, back to the past:
it was at this point, in this hallway, that the pipe swinging security guard made his presence known to us...

if a building gets torn down

or remodeled
i'll call it out by name...
since the ford auditorium is being demo'd right now
i'll post a few pics in the coming weeks
and attempt to tell a story
or two...

i'll preface all of it by posting a pic tonight, and
gathering my thoughts
photos
words
etc...

what i will say is:
even in it's horribly drab
bunker style appearance, i really liked exploring the ford auditorium
it was an extremely difficult place to shoot
for many reasons, and
it was a nice change of pace...

my first time exploring inside was a couple of years a go
but that's a story for another day...

here's one photo of the backstage basement area, this is a pile of rubble now...
