this church was pretty freshly abandoned

still had the stained glass.

i tried to get an exposure that
matched what i saw with my eyes.
pretty extreme darks
bright colorful glass
deep red carpet
lots of shadows
so i sat down
and took a self portrait...

i finished physical therapy on thursday

so that means i'm a little closer
to being ok...?
ok in terms of my shoulder
my arm
my bicep.

it's been 2 1/2 years of constant pain
some days, agonizing
not a lot of sleep
a bunch of missed work
missed opportunities
2 1/2 years
and now i'm a little closer
to being ok
closer to being normal again

i found a blog post the other day
where i complained about my sore shoulder
i forgot that this thing has been going on
for at least 8 years

i guess the real pain started
about 2 1/2 years a go
right before i had the 1st surgery

on thursday i finished physical therapy
they threw me a pizza party
i'm a little closer,
to being ok...

this light pattern was cool

trying to photograph it and have the exposure match
what you see with your eye
was pretty difficult.

i'm pretty happy with this one...

2 man cell.

this area of the prison was pretty hard to shoot.
lots of light coming in from behind the camera,
but the cells were covered in 70% darkness...

i thought it made for some pretty cool shots...

solitary confinement

this section of the prison was pretty cool.
the cells reminded me of northville
or mental hospitals in general...

these cell blocks were so tall

it was like shooting a 6 story building, inside.

went on a quick but awesome road trip.

sat in the car for 6 hours
and shot for about 5 1/2
so this was a pretty good test
to see how my bionic surgically repaired arm
could handle some more serious shooting...

i did pretty well
in terms of my arm that is.

there's some other aspects of my life that i'm not so sure about
but that's gonna have to be talked about
another time.

anyway,
here's a shot of a cell block
and a portion of a cell,
in the shadows
on the right side of the frame.

this shot has it all;
extreme lighting conditions
black blacks
bright whites
shadows
highlights
rust
peeling paint....!

this prison was designed to be shot with the camera in the portrait orientation
and i hate that orientation.
there's a reason your TV is in the landscape position,
it's because it looks better.
movies are shot in wide angle, 16:3, 4:3, 70mm, 35mm
but they are not filmed in 4x6 or 8x10
you get the idea?

so when i turned my camera back to landscape
i was finally able to settle in
and figure out my shots.

this one,
gives me a boner!

maybe you have a boner too?
you're  welcome.

i am awake.

fueled by hatred
and Trader Joe's cinnamon rolls.
2, to be exact
cinnamon rolls
that is.

my late night poor choices have me here...
my late in life poor choices, also
have me here
typing
waiting
hating...

longing for more
longing for; a drink of water
my mouth
my hands-
covered in frosting
Trader Joe's cinnamon rolls
and hatred...

longing for more
searching
blinded by
poor choices
an internet connection
and fear.

another film shot

more expired Fuji Superia.
this shot is of the Magyar Club
in Delray, South West Detroit.

i never had the pleasure of being inside of this building
while it was open for business...

my mother had her wedding reception here, back in the day.
i'm sure i have several photos, but
i can't bring myself to look through them,
now that she's dead...

this is one of the strangest houses i've seen.

maybe it's the textured cinder block or
the fact that they used it on the whole fucking house?
whatever it is, it just seemed surreal...

whatever.

i've decided to go backwards

i'm shooting film:
it's expensive,
it takes longer,
and it's harder.

for the first time in my life, i have great gear, with pretty much all the right lenses, etc...
but i've decided to go backwards
the end is the beginning, is the end...

anyway,
this film shot, of the Delray RR tower,
is my favorite
of the recent ones that i've been editing.
this shot is a little off on the color, but it's old expired film
and i think it looks cool...

at one time,

delray had a large Jewish community.
now, the jewish people
as well as most people,
have left delray...
but
here's a current photo of
the first hebrew congregation synagogue
on burdeno

and here's a photo of the gunsberg's building

i don't really know what this building was originally,
but it was likely built by, or for
a jewish family...
if that's the case,
the Gunsbergs
likely went to the aforementioned synagogue...

unless they were bad jews?
in that case
they're going to hell.

i almost had to shoot a pitbull, when i took this photograph

stand your ground, right?
anyway, i started shooting some film again.
I shot this on 35mm,
i'm waiting on the negatives
so i can upload one of those shots
and compare the film
to the digital...
i did get one roll back from the lab today
and it was blank
that's right,
blank
36 exposures of nothingness...

i forgot that i was supposed to be blogging again

here's a shack
in delray.
i never knew the person/people who used to live here
and i'm not really sure if anyone lives here now?
detroit is full of house that make you say, "there's no fucking way anyone lives in That house"
and then low and behold:
on trash day, there's a garbage can,
sitting out front.

i'll have to go back on garabage day
and see if anyone's home...
